Social Media Manager

The Center for Public Integrity, a leader in nonprofit investigative news, is looking for a social media expert to lead audience engagement efforts and work with our distribution partners to find the widest possible audience for our work. Unlike most traditional media organizations, the Center only publishes online, which means digital presentation and marketing is never an after-thought, but our primary focus.

The Social Media Manager role is crucial for audience development. You are the primary voice on social platforms.

The ideal candidate has a journalism background and at least three years’ experience in running social media campaigns, developing engagement strategies and building a following on Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr and other emerging networks.

The role is part planner and organizer, helping to craft the Center’s outreach and engagement strategies across social networks and through other media outlets. The Social Media Manager helps coordinate distribution to ensure the best possible packaging and presentation for our work across multiple channels.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop the best strategies and tactics for building audience online
  • Work with reporters and editors on daily and project-based outreach plans
  • Interact with audiences on a daily basis on Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr and other social platforms
  • Coordinate publishing and engagement activities with media partners
  • Provide metrics and analysis to help inform decision-making
  • Evangelize and train newsroom in social media ‘best practices’
  • Stay up-to-date on emerging trends and best practices to incorporate new, relevant social media platforms and technologies
  • Moderate on-site comments to help facilitate meaningful discussion of the Center's work
  • Devise workable initiatives that leverage the knowledge, expertise and abilities of the public to inform and aid the Center's reporting
  • Help reporters with source-building and community outreach through social media, online distribution and effective use of the Public Insight Network

Qualifications:

  • At least three years’ experience working in social media, preferably for a media organization
  • Highly proficient in web-based publishing tools and technologies
  • Excellent writing skills, especially able to write with a strong “voice”
  • Demonstrated experience working with partners outside the organization
  • Experience with gathering and analysis metrics related to engagement and reach
  • Bachelor’s degree

Computer-Assisted Reporter

The Computer-Assisted Reporter will use computer programs, including spreadsheets, database managers, mapping tools, and statistical software, to analyze data for outliers, trends, and other newsworthy information.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Develop story and project ideas and discuss with the managing editor.  Seek out databases, sources, and documents to help with development of story and project ideas. Conduct analysis for Center investigative teams.  Compile documentation to facilitate fact checking and perform data checking on data analysis from Center reporters.  Coordinate with multimedia team to help create excellent, audience-directed content including multi-media and social media.  Adhere to Code of Ethics and Editorial Standards and Practices of the Personnel Policy Manual and Employee Handbook.   Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:  University degree or equivalent experience in a news environment.

Skills:  Strong knowledge of SQL.

Working knowledge of statistical analysis.  Working knowledge of statistical mapping, particularly in ARC GIS.  Interest in learning additional computer programs and analytical skills.  Research, writing, and reporting skills.  Advanced problem solving skills.  Excellent interpersonal skills and the capacity to work well with a diverse range of individuals – team player.

Ability to take initiative, receive constructive feedback, and work with minimal supervision.

EXPERIENCE/ACCOMPLISHMENTS

Experience working with computer-assisted reporting at a news organization. Demonstrated ability to use data analysis to discover investigative tips and ideas.

DRUPAL/LAMP DEVELOPER

Position: Permanent with benefits

The Center for Public Integrity, a leader in nonprofit investigative journalism, is seeking a fast-learning, flexible web developer with a background in LAMP stacks to work at its headquarters in Washington, D.C.

The Drupal/LAMP developer is responsible for maintaining and developing the Drupal 7 codebase, associated web services, databases and cloud servers supporting iWatch News. This position reports to the web editor and the Chief Digital Officer.

Your main responsibilities will be:

  • Leading development of the next generation of web platforms, social networking tools and publishing tools to showcase the Center’s award-winning reporting.
  • Coordinating with editors and web producers to ensure that needed functionality meets usability and workflow requirements.
  • Implement bug fixes and assist with routine maintenance of existing websites.
  • Research emerging technologies to help identify potential revenue opportunities and/or enhancements to website user experience.
  • Participate in all aspects of website development/redevelopment: analysis, planning, testing, development, maintenance.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Minimum 3 years experience developing in PHP.
  • Minimum 2 years experience with Drupal, including Drupal 7 module development and theming.
  • HTML, CSS and Web Standards experience and knowledge.
  • Understanding and experience managing MySQL Server and Linux.
  • Management of projects using Git and Github.
  • Experience building and using web services and AJAX, including authentication schemes using OAuth 1 and 2.

PREFERRED SKILLS:

  • Experience in the news media industry.
  • Experience working in other programming languages/frameworks.
  • Experience in traditional software development.
  • Prior leadership experience in web development enterprise.
  • Experience with Linux web server management.
  • Experience with these software or services is also a plus: Hudson, Varnish
